This exhibit features 7th grade project The Virtual Trip to Eastern Europe. Students "travel" to one of the destinations, often connected to the birthplace of one of their ancestors. Students “purchase” tickets and “take” a flight and train/bus ride to the place of their destination, and depict this experience by creating a Green Screen video. The next steps involve learning about the rich and vibrant Jewish culture that was lost because of the Holocaust. Students learn about Yiddish language, record themselves pronouncing Yiddish words and phrases, and research Jewish music and theater. One of the students’ favorite parts of the project is jewish food. After finding the recipe online, the 7th graders do the cooking and video record the process! The serious research begins after that. Students learn about the Jewish history of the place and create atimeline from the time when the Jews first arrived there until the Holocaust. Finding out what exactly happened at the destination during the Holocaust is the last part of the project. Students use various sources from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Yad Vashem and other museums, survivor and witness testimonies to find out the details. One of the assignments is to discover places on the map where the atrocities took place.

The Museum elective group together with several Ball State University students visited the Children's Museum of Indianapolis and met with the museum professionals to discuss and learn exhibit development.
Jewish Population of Former Soviet Republics Before and After the HolocaustOn Monday, November 18, HHAI students and teachers welcomed a group of Israeli and Hungarian young professionals. Our guests shared a presentation about Israel, tried out our students' creations in Virtual Reality (CoSpaces Edu and Eureka World) and visited HHAI Holocaust Museum.
Partnershiptogether WesternGalilee Jewish Federation of Greater Indianapolis Today, students ventured to Ball State University as a continuation of our on-going partnership between HHAI and Ball State University through Ms. Tuchman and . The students had the opportunity to tour the newly built David Letterman Lab and Digital Corps. During the tours, students had the chance to interact with various modes of technology.
Also, as a part of the trip students went to a special workshop on Design Thinking (an integral part of our museum renovation process) with HHAI alumnus and Masters candidate, Courtney Tuchman. They had the chance to learn about design and how it relates to building interactive exhibits like the oncs our students made for our Holocaust museum. Our community event has come and gone and we are still reeling from the experience! We had about 150 members of the community come through the museum and many left awe-struck by the work that had been done in our newly renovated space. Along with a museum tour, guests were able to sample shtetl cuisine, listen to a presentation about the Music of the Holocaust performed by Ball State University musicians, and listen to the harrowing story of Mark Hasten, school founder and World War II veteran. During our event we also debuted the documentary that outlined the origins of the museum and the reasons for the renovation. The documentary can been seen in the last video shown in the post below. Below you can also view pictures from the event, a video that tours our museum space, and a virtual tour of the museum created through the virtual reality platform, Firestorm. We’ve already begun to see the impact our museum will have on our community. Schools are showing interest in coming to visit the space. We’ve learned more about a possible partnership not only with Ball State University, but Indiana University as well. We know this is only the beginning of the possibilities that this newly renovated space has to offer! |
